Treatment Options for Erectile Dysfunction

November 13, 2009
Erectile dysfunction is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for the needs of his partner. Most men experience this at some point in their lives, usually by age 40, and are not psychologically affected by it.Frequent erectile dysfunction can cause emotional and relationship problems, and often leads to diminished self-esteem.

Erectile dysfunction has many causes, both physical and psychological. Initial management for ED depends on the possible cause of the disorder in each individual patient. Men who experience erectile dysfunction have never had so many treatment options. Treatment options for ED have significantly improved over the past few years and new research and medications continue to increase treatment choices. Various therapies are available to successfully treat underlying physical causes and related emotional difficulties.

Treatment Options:

There are many treatment option for erectile dysfunction.Let them know one by one:

Oral Medications:

Oral medications used to treat erectile dysfunction include selective enzyme inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil [Viagra®], vardenafil [Levitra®], tadalafil [Cialis®]).The convenience of oral medications has made them the first-line ED treatment in many instances, yet studies indicate that between 30-70% of men do not respond to these drugs, and others experience many side effects including headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, and facial flushing. oral medications had become became one of the most well-recognized treatments for Erectile Dysfunction.

Viagra® is absorbed and processed rapidly by the body and is usually taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before intercourse. Results vary depending on the cause of erectile dysfunction, but studies have shown that Viagra is effective in 75% of cases. It helps men with erectile dysfunction associated with diabetes mellitus (57%), spinal cord injuries (83%), and radical prostatectomy (43%).

In clinical studies, Levitra® has been shown to work quickly, provide consistent results, and improve sexual function in most men the first time they take the drug. It also has shown to be effective in men of all ages, in patients with diabetes mellitus, and in men who have undergone radical prostatectomy.

Cialis® has been shown in clinical trials to stay in the body longer than the other selective enzyme inhibitors. It promotes erection within 30 minutes and enhances the ability to achieve erection for up to 36 hours.

Sex Therapy:

A significant number of men develop impotence from psychological causes that can be overcome. When a physiological cause is treated, subsequent self-esteem problems may continue to impair normal function and performance. Sex therapists emphasize the need for men and their partners to be motivated and willing to adapt to psychological and behavioral modifications, including those that result from medical or surgical treatment.

Penile Prosthesis:

Given the availability of less invasive, more effective treatments, penile prosthesis has become a treatment of last resort.  The best penile prosthesis is comprised of two inflatable tubes, a pump, and a reservoir. Pressing a valve on the pump mechanism deactivates it, and the fluid returns to the reservoir, resulting in a flaccid penis.Complications can include infection, bleeding, pain and discomfort, mechanical failure, or extrusion of part of the prosthesis through a weakened wall of the erectile chambers.

Penile Implants :

Penile implants involve surgical insertion of malleable or inflatable rods or tubes into the penis.  A semi-rigid prosthesis is a silicon-covered flexible metal rod.t requires the simplest surgical procedure of all the prostheses.n inflatable penile prosthesis consists of two soft silicone or bioflex (plastic) tubes inserted in the penis, a small reservoir implanted in the abdomen, and a small pump implanted in the scrotum. To produce an erection, a man pumps sterile liquid from the reservoir into the tubes by squeezing the pump in the scrotum.

Intra-Urethral Suppository:

MUSE contains a vasodilator known as Alprostadil prepared in the form of a pellet that is inserted into the urethra, via an applicator. While successful for some men, the effect is often limited given that it contains only one vasodilator which is poorly absorbed and rarely results in a complete erection on its own.

Natural Treatment:

Nutritional and lifestyle choices that can contribute to difficulties achieving and maintaining an erection. It is important to consult a physician about erectile dysfunction to determine the cause, correct any underlying organic factor, and receive appropriate treatment.Poor dietary choices may lead to vascular disease (the most common cause of ED), which interferes with the erection process by restricting blood flow to the penis.Natural treatment can support erectile function by improving overall health.

Good nutrition may help improve erectile dysfunction.

  •   Eat whole, fresh, unrefined, and unprocessed foods. Include fruits (lots of richly pigmented berries to support vascular integrity), vegetables, whole grains, soy, nuts, olive oil, and cold-water fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, halibut, and mackerel).
  •    Avoid sugar, dairy products, refined foods, fried foods, junk foods, and caffeine.

Herbal Medicine :

Herbal medicines usually do not have significant side effects when used appropriately and at suggested doses. Occasionally, an herb at the prescribed dose causes stomach upset or a headache. It is recommended that only high-quality products be used. These herbs may be used to treat erectile dysfunction:

  • Damiana – Traditionally used as an aphrodisiac and for various sexual disorders; however, there are no current studies to confirm its effectiveness.
  • Asian ginseng – Traditionally used for male impotence, though no current studies support this usage.

Physical Medicine
  • Kegel exercises – Increase pelvic blood flow and muscle tone.
  • Exercise – Aerobic exercise and weight training support the cardiovascular system, increase overall energy, and promote relaxation while at rest.
